REVIEW: NZXT E650 fully modular PSU

The E Series ATX Power Supplies from NZXT are the first PSUs seen from the company in quite some time but as a fan of their case designs, it’s good to see something else to make our PCs look and perform well.

Working with Seasonic, the new PSUs are rated 8- Plus Gold and use Japanese Capacitors which should provide long-term durability and reliability.

The usual attention to detail can be seen within the packaging, both the PSU and the cables have separate fabric cases, you’ll get 1 20+4 pin EATX cable, 1 4+4 pin CPU power cable (we’re told that there are 2 for the E850) and 2 675mm PCI-e power cables with a 75mm additional end to each.

NZXT are also pushing their CAM software, already used for their lighting, cooling and general PC monitoring, with digital voltage and temperature monitoring for precise, real-time information.  This means that wattage by rail can be measured and temperature can be monitored too.  It integrates well with the NZXT water coolers and CPU monitoring to provide a good overall picture of how your PC is performing.

We had the 650W E650 configuration to test out and were surprised to find that it was pretty quiet in operation.  The fully modular design meant that we only needed to fit the wires that were required and therefore cut down on the usual jumble of wires in the case.  One extra port, a Mini USB, sits on the side of the PSU and allows for monitoring through CAM, via a new ‘power’ tab on the software, though this means you’re going to need a free USB slot available (on top of those you might have already used for the cooling and lighting).

Another feature that impressed me when using the CAM software was the active monitoring for the 12V, 5V, and 3.3V rails, coupled with the software over current protection which works across all three 12V outputs.

The low noise and power monitoring make this an interesting proposition for those looking for a new PSU, especially with the backing of Seasonic.  For those already using CAM for their cooling and CPU monitoring, this is a great addition to a PC build.
